4l80e rebuild for 2002 Yukon Swap, SLOWWWWW BUILD....
Like the title says I'm eventually swapping in a 4l80e into my 2002 Yukon project truck on the cheap. I have time and elbow grease but also have a wife, mortgage and another fun play car. I'm doing this to build a nice and reliable storm chasing truck. I picked it up with 140k miles for $3700 and rebuilt pretty much everything just to get it on the road.
Before this I never touched a diff, transfer case etc. I'll be needing some hand holding but hope good pictures of my progress will help others.
Mah truck:
Diff rebuild:
Transfer case pump rub fix and rebuild:
Pump fix:
So I have some street cred with rebuilding things. Not a lot, ok pretty much still zero but I am persistent!
I got a 4l80e for $400 that a was a GM Good Wrench rebuild with ~30k on the clock. It was behind a 454 HD truck that got in an accident.
Dirty:
The coolant holes, other bits and the fact it was behind a 454 leads me to believe it was a 1993 model. GM Good Wrench removed the original label so until I get inside I won't know for sure. I have the ATSG manual to help identify parts and years.
A **** ton of cleaning, degreasing, wire brushing, dremeling, scrubbing, washing and rustoleum later....
Opened up the pan. No chunks, good fluid color, some material in the fluid and on the magnet. I think I'll just replace all the clutches. Some water in the pan from my aggressive cleaning.
My ultimate goal is to support a turbo @ about 6 PSI on my 5.3 to help the truck deal with its weight. Before that comes a 14BSF rear end, torsen diff and so forth but thats for another thread.
I'll update once I get further inside the trans. Perhaps this weekend I'll flip it and go through the underside.
