I've pretty much decided to do the shift kit on the spare and rebuild the broken after much more research. It will also allow me time to fund it and hopefully do it right.

On the bright side.... the little drip I originally went in to fix IS fixed.

you will be better off that way, and you want have to swap until you need it. I have the full kent moore kit and still have yet to build a tranny. I may be looking for a core before long just to start. I bought a 05 80e and it was in to good of shape to rebuild so I put in 100% of the shift kit and called it a day.

Glad I didn't order a 34 element intermediate sprag. I've torn down the spare trans. Installed the transgo springs in the intermediate. While there figured I'd have a look at the infamous sprag....

Already have a 34 element in this 2003 trans.

Holy older thread Batman. I'd forgotten about it. A lot's happened since then. Divorce, moving yada yada yada.

The spare tranny is in and doing great. The damaged one is in the garage partially torn down and I'm bargain hunting for a couple hard parts. Failure was in the first thrust bearing set you come to in the tear down that I probably didn't seat properly when I did the pump mods on it.

Thanks for a quick reply, I´m currently considering building a 4L80 for my GTO. So I´m just reading everything I can find and trying to figure out what parts I should put in it.

Take it for whats it worth but basically a stock 80e with shift kit has taken everything I can throw at it, without a whimper. A 5500lb, dead hook, truck. Easily 500/500 + whp on the gas.

The first failed only because I screwed it up. The bearing had to be fubar'ed the minute I started it up and still went 6000 miles with several trips to the track before it started acting up. It still functioned, mostly, fine.

When I "build" this one it will consist of Alto frictions and billet shafts, and the transgo kit it already has. If I put it together correctly, I will have absolute faith that I will never break it.
