4L80E Shift Kit?
I am planning to pick up a low milage 4L80 out of a '04 2500 but want to put in a shift kit before installing it in my truck. I am not planning a rebuild at this time but later down the road I may try to do it myself. Therefor I need a kit that reworks the valve body and the boost valve in the pump only. I have found three different (or so I think) shift kits from TransGo and don't know which one I need.
SK-4L80E - Shift Kit and Boost Valve
4L80E-HD2 - Reprogramming Kit
4L80E-PSK - Performance Shift Kit
The HD2 seems to be the most popular but I do not plan on changing the drum clutch springs at this time. Can I use this kit and not install the internal parts (untill later if I decide on a rebuild) without any ill effects? I didn't know if the valve body modifications were dependent on the internal modifications or not.

I think it may be the other way around. The drum springs may have to be installed to accommodate for the extra hydraulic pressures incurred by the pressure booster. If the pressures get too high it may over power those springs and break them and that wouldn't be good. I really don't know for sure, I'm more in tune with the 700r4 and previous trannies, but that's what makes sense to me. Probably the best thing is to call TransGo's Tech line and ask them, they'd be able to tell you for sure.

I installed the HD-2 in my 80e, the directions said that you do not need to install the internal parts if you aren't taking the tranny apart while doing the kit.

I forget all that it was, the instructions are fairly clear though as far as that goes. The only thing about the kit that sucks are two plugs that go into separator plate. The instructions say to lay the plugs in on a flat surface, and hit them with a hammer to expand them. Well that never worked for me and they ended up falling out, luckily i found them both in the pan. I would recommend soldering or brazing them into the plate in addition to expanding them with the hammer.
