Anyway OP, a healthy 80e bone stock will be fine for what your doing. I see a lot of guys manually locking the converter once they get the sled moving and swear it helps.
Not really sure it was all useless? Obviously a duramax wouldn't be allowed in a gas class not real sure where that one came from. If he wants a pulling truck buy a duramax and pull work stock or 2.5. I was just putting in my 2 cents pretty much saying he is wasting money trying to make a half ton gas truck into a pulling truck, just beating a dead horse doing that. But to each there own.

If you want a pulling truck buy a duramax like everybody else imo. A stock 80e should be suffice, but i would run the 60e till she blows you will break other parts before the trans though. worry about other modifications first before a transmission.

I forgot about this but since I seen these words of wisdom I decided I sorta needed to comment. You may think you know but you don't have a ******* clue.

So far I have smoked a stock 60e at 70k mi. Next rebuilt it and proceeded to kill a converter. And finally on fresh rebuild with billet converter poped a output shaft. So at this point I'm done trying to run a 60e in a 6500lb truck.

Also for the rest of the drive line its on par with a top tier 2.6 truck as far as axles and drive lines go. So its not really a half ton anymore.

As for build a race truck why would I do that when about every track is two hours away and I can be at multiple different sled pulls with in a hour of me. And if I want to go race I'll hop in my cummins tow rig and race that. Or once I get my ultra 4 car finished I'll go race that and get a real adrenalin rush.

Finally you basically tell me I'm pissing up a rope trying to pull street stock with a half ton truck, witch in theory I could pull that off for 10k or less. So instead you tell me to get a d-max and pull ws or 2.5 witch I'd say ws would be around 30-40k by the time I buy a truck and 2.5 would be 50k+. Seeing as nw Ohio is a hot bed for 2.5 class and you need 8-900 rwhp to run at the front of the pack. So as I said from the start you don't have a ******* clue.
