Default 4l80E Slight whine

Guys, Just installed an 04 80E along with a new PI converter. Everything seems to be working fine. Just have a slight whine. Can't hear it at idle, in gear and just the initial throttle to get moving from a stop. Don't really hear it when at speed. I had to pull the pump and add a spring for the PI converter.

Anything to worry about?

my 1st gear whines.. its a 2004 80E also.. if i put it in tow/haul messing around and let first gear run up to 3000 or so you can hear it good.

My dad has a 04 2500HD 6L/80E work truck and his whines extremely loud but its got almost 200k miles on it. It hasnt given up the ghost yet, so im not sweating it

Yep 1st gear in both 4L80E's that I've had has a slight whine. If it's real loud, that's not good, but a little bit is normal.

Some HD trans have straight cut gears that will whine kinda like the old Muncie M 22 Rock Crusher

half of the 80s do half don't. The straight cut comment is always what I get from tranny guys. All I know is that my 03 HD always had the whine and never a moments trouble pushing 6200lbs with a boosted 6.0.

Tell us what ya think about the 80.... once you get past 1st, the shifts are nice aren't they!

Yeah so far I love it. Haven't dogged it yet but the shifts just feel different. Crisper and a different power band.

I thought the stait cut gears where 05 and up... Also the starit cut gear is a strong 5 pinion planet rather than the old 4 pinion version.. (85e) I found even the 4 pinion reaction carrier makes noise in first.....

I have yet to have time to mess with it. Hopefully this weekend I can start the removal.

even if whining is normal with the 80E, I would still check to be sure it isnt the front pump or the TC whining......
