Default 5-speed tranny's

...are they any good in these trucks? I haven't looked at a manual RCSB GM yet but are the clutches on them hydraulically operated? Reason I ask is because I plan to pick one up and throw a 6 speed in it thus I'm curious as to what all I may have to change when I do this. Thanks!

good luck finding one, not sure how it is by you but up here in WI everything trucks is extended cab automatic and mostly 4x4....I had to search long and hard for my reg cab 2wd with a v8 and auto. I have never seen a v8 manual for sale.

I have the 4.8 with the stick. The trans sucks. Its really loud, and can not handle any real power. I just finished swaping the 5 speed for the 6 speed. I love it. If you are going to put the 6 speed in with the 4.8 you will need a spacer , from what I have been told. The crank on the 4.8 sticks out alittle more than the ls1. (do to the fact that it uses a nv3500 trany) I have the 4.8 (stick), 5.3 (auto), and 6.0 (auto) in my garage now. The cranks on the automatic tranies seems to stick out the same 1/4 inch. I bolted up the 5.3 with the 6 speed. The swap was easy, you just have to modify the starter, cut hole in the floor, shorten drive shaft. You use the same trany cross member and mount from the 5 speed. The drive shaft yoke will not work because the nv3500 uses a thicker yoke. I just used a camero yoke. If you can find the stock drive shaft from a RCSB auto that will work great. The 6 speed and the 4l60 is the same size. Have your computer progamed for the 6 speed. use the harness and plugs from the 6 speed. I used the stock clutch master cylinder and camero slave (2002 I think). I am running alot of horsepower so I used the 0z 700 clutch set up. I am running the 5.3 with the 6.0 heads,z06 cam, 918 springs, 43lbs injectors, obx FMIC, sts 67 turbo, and more. I am just breaking in the clutch and then I will dyno tune at synergy motor sports. Let me know if you have any questions.
