I say it's a combo of things. if they're only making it 1,500 miles before shitting the bed, there is probably a build issue. the weight of your truck is not helping

It could also be a tune issue as well.

Its a 2009 sierra extended cab 4x4 with a supercharged 5.3 putting 525 hp to the wheels. Truck weighs 5700 lbs. 3/4 clutches are burning up. takes about 1,000- 1,500 miles to finish them off after the reinstall of the trans. Been monitoring the temps via the cluster and nothing over 160 deg F.
Its a daily driver, basically to and from work. of course i use the power... but im not just out the beating the snot out of it. remote start and warm up before driving it with any throttle.
Trans builder says his research says its the drums fault, needs upgraded. he uses this build for race cars with more power than my truck and has no issues with them. they however arent daily driven 5700lb vehicles. that's basically where i am at with this problem. i have been doing some looking to get a grasp on it myself but any shared experience would be appreciated.

... I am assuming the trans tune is stock but I don't currently know the answer. i will see if i can get a parts list of whats in the trans already also.
You will never get a 60 to live with that kind of power. I killed 6 of them before swapping in an 80E. Take my advice it's cheaper in the long run to swap in the 80 than rebuilt dead 60's only for them to go out to.

I seen 25 HP and the title and thought you were pushing it for a 4l60e.

Then I re read and seen 525! That's about 28x too much for a 4l60!

All jokes, Billet drum upgrade would help with the 3-4 drum deflection under pressure and probably help your problem, but I always like to see 80e swaps

A STOCK 4L80E or 4L85E with a shift kit and a good tune will hold this all day long and be much cheaper than a built (4L6xx/4L7xx) whatever they call that 700r4 POS these days. I wouldn't put one of those POS things in my lawnmower.

I did the 80e swap long ago when it was still being figured out and not super common... but its not 100% necessary. You can build a 60e to hold your power but its gonna take someone like Transbuilderguy to do it... its all OPINION but i love the 60e way better than the 80e... i hate the gearing and the size of that heavy bastard. CHODA is holding and several others are too with 60e transmissions and it can be done... But its expensive. If you want to save money your will probably be better off going 4l80e

I like the gear spacing of the 4L80E MUCH better than the 700r4/4L60E. If you are building a 4L80E anyway, TCI offers a pair of lower 1st gear planetary sets. 2.96 or 2.75 first for about $1000 that are not only strong but give you the same acceleration as a 4L60E in 1st. However I would just put a little deeper rear gear in the truck and have lower gearing everywhere. Go from a 3.42 to a 4.10 and pickup most of your acceleration. Put a lightweight 9.5-10.5" 2,600-3,400 rpm converter in the 4L80E and you won't even feel a power loss over a stock stalled 60E.

When you have the transmissions both gutted and the parts laying on the bench, it is easy to see the superiority of the 4L80E at holding torque.
