whats the difference between the different atf's like dex3 and dex6, and arent the 4l60's between the years the same? so why would they need different atf's?

Dexron 6 is a million times more efficient than dexron 3 first of all. They apparently started using newer technology starting in 06 and it requires a better fluid to help stay lubricated. Wish I knew exactly whats different. Majority of the change had to do with the introduction of the 6 speed. It wouldn't last worth a damn using dexron 3 in tests.

Isn't DexronVI semi-synthetic or something like that? It should be noted that you can always go backwards on GM's with Dex, meaning that you can use DexVI in a trans that originally came with DexIII, but not the other way around. Now for "built" transmissions, I'd go by what the builder recommends...

Probably cuz you use Dexron 3 in automatic transmissions?
GM started requiring DexVI in 06. I don't build em so I can't say if they started using different parts in 06+ or not or if the specs are tighter. OR if they just want to make more money off the new Dex VI Since they let the DexIII patent expire.
From everything I've read it was designed because the 6 speeds wouldn't stay together and if you use Dex III in an 06+ vehicle GM will void warranty work on your trans.
However after seeing the test results for Dex VI, I don't see why you would want to run III anymore other than to save a few bucks. There is NO comparison between the two, Dex VI is just plain better in every way. That's part of the reason they skipped from III to VI.

That seems like some damn good Transmission insurance if you ask me.

Friction Stability (improved 100%)
120% improvement in clutch durability
DEXRON-VI maintains an almost constant viscosity over time, while the viscosity of DEXRON-III degrades considerably.
Foaming Resistance (improved 150%)
Oxidation Resistance (improved 100%)
