Default Are the 800# springs overkill in the Eaton LSD?

I'm in need of an Eaton to replace my G80. The standard springs are 400#, with 800# being an option. Does anyone know the extra cost and, more importantly, are the 800s worth that additional cost?

I have the 400# ones on my truck and they work just fine until one tire is compeletely off the ground then its like you have an open diff Im wishing I would have gotten the 800# springs. I have a 4wd also so I see situations like that more often then you so for you it may not be a big deal either one will get the job done but the 800# springs will act more like a locker than a posi.

For off road I would get the 800# springs. For street/strip it can be overkill in most situations.

From what I've heard they can chatter and slam. They're nice and strong for racing, but not necessarily for everyday use on the street. However, you can always ask BlownChevy, I believe he got the 800#ers for his Eaton.

Dropped my truck off today for the Eaton and 4.10 install. Installer told me he recommended taking the springs out alltogether for street use. I told him to leave them in and I'll see if I like it. He said the pre-load wasn't really required if you weren't going off road. This is coming from a guy who had been doing these for decades and his shop is dedicated to rearend/gear/posi installs and performance tranny builds. He doesn't have any springs in his eaton on his daily driver. If this is true then the 800#ers would probaly be overkill.

Interesting info. I live in Milton and am curious where you are getting the install done and how much they are charging?

The place is called Maksymyks driveshafts. I don't have the number with me right now. He's in the FWB phone book. I had all the parts except for new axel seals ($16) and my total was 465.00 out the door.

Deep dig here... but anyone have any more input on going to the 800# springs?

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a new Eaton LSD Posi and wondering if I should just swap to the 800# springs before installing.
Also is it true that I'll also need the $120 #29492 24 steel plates to use the 800# springs?

This will all be going into a weekend warrior that never sees adverse weather and is driven very aggressively, drifting, donuts, rolling burnouts, quite a few test n tune track days, etc.... oh and is also 4WD, although I doubt either spring choice would effect 4hi launches much.
