Are the 800# springs overkill in the Eaton LSD?
#11
I have the normal 400lb springs in the Eaton in my Mustang and it will chatter the inside drag radial on a tight turn. Trying to back out of a parking spot with the 6 speed is a challenge because of how tight the diff is. When doing burnouts, it spins both tires evenly. Unless you need to have a tire off the ground and the truck still pull, I can't see anybody needing the 800lb springs.

How tall was the tire on your mustang?
I think I may be leaning towards the 800# springs, but still wondering if I need the 24 steel plate kit for install too?
Kind of a bummer you can't just buy the Eaton Posi diff already setup with the 800#. After buying the diff and other parts separately it all ends up being same price as a full Detroit Locker, but I don't want the inconsistent lock/unlock on the street.

Might talk to Randy's ring and pinion, he sells and builds Eaton diffs for many applications. They could give their insight and even a price of one setup the way you want it.

Gotcha. Yeah really not sure how much it matters, but looks like your tire worked out to be about 27.8" tall... the combo I'm currently running is 29.75", or 275/45 20.
Yeah I think I will just for the heck of it. Not sure if they'll be open tomorrow or not. I think their prices are just a bit higher than most others for the regular 8.6 Eaton though...

The 800 pound setups don't utilize the carbon clutch disks like the 400 lb setup does. The carbon clutches cant take the pressure like the conventional clutches can. The carbon clutches are more heat resistant.
With the 400lb setups, the tires will still chatter on a fullsize Tahoe during tight turns.
The 800 lb setup is 29591-00S and costs $90 from Summit.
29590-00S is for 400lbs
29589-00S is for 200lbs
the disc and shim packs are $120 from SUmmit
29402-00S (NOT 29492) $120 (24 steel discs)
18 disk is $99-Summit.
29403-00S
29426-00S carbon disk/shims $120-Summit
29411-00S Gear service kit $220 from Summit
19559-010 gets you the Easton LSD "Posi" loaded with 400 lb springs and carbon frictions
All parts LSD parts are listed on page 10/16 but the actual applicable parts for this 10 bolt 8.5/8.6" rear p/n19559-010 are in the chart on page 11 or 16. You will have to scoll between page 10 and 11 to see exactly whats available for the 10 bolt 8.5/8.6" with 30 spline axles.
Here is the revised for spring 2013 Eaton parts numbers list. They now support GM 10.5" FF with the Trutrac.

If you want to see pics of any p/n simply go to Summit and type in the p/n's I have listed and they will come up with a price.
I have always been told to stick with the 400 lb carbon clutch setups and a street vehicle.
No matter which clutch preload you choose, you will be getting a much stronger rearend than the stock open or stock G80 rear. Much more metal on these. Same goes for the Eaton Detroit Truetrac.
Trutrac vs. stock open dif.

Deep dig here... but anyone have any more input on going to the 800# springs?
I'm close to pulling the trigger on a new Eaton LSD Posi and wondering if I should just swap to the 800# springs before installing.
Also is it true that I'll also need the $120 #29492 24 steel plates to use the 800# springs?
This will all be going into a weekend warrior that never sees adverse weather and is driven very aggressively, drifting, donuts, rolling burnouts, quite a few test n tune track days, etc.... oh and is also 4WD, although I doubt either spring choice would effect 4hi launches much.

You have heard of inconsistency wit the Detroit Locker.? Of the actual Detroit lockers, and not those "lunchbox lockers" from Powertrax?
$660 is a lot of money though. It more expensive for the 8.5/8.6 than the 10.5" FF.
$500 for LSD
$434 for Truetrac.

Damn I just don't know now. Still piecing together parts to complete an lsxr swap so I don't have a ton of money to blow here...
I was kind of thinking that this Eaton with the 800# springs night be a nice "slightly quieter" step before getting a Locker. And by inconsistencies with the locker, I was just reading about some people complaining about when you coast up to a stop light (which happens often) that the Locker will still be unlocked, then if you forget to preload it before taking off it will clunk violently. And I don't want every guy I'm next to at a light to think I'm preparing for a launch, kind of kills my stock looking pick up truck sleeper effect..
...ah I might just get a Trutrac like I have in the Sierra and be done with it.

I had a lunchbox locker and hated it. Noisy, clicked and banged during tight turns. I remember taking long gentle curves on the freeway, and the locker made the truck want to go straight and not follow the curve. Equal tire height is 100% critical wit the locker on the street as well.
The 800lb LSD setup might be what you need since this is an all out weekend warrior. A little tire scrub when turing into parking spots wont be too bad for you. Or you can try the 400lb, and if you need more, swap it out after.
No matter what you select,, you will be getting the strength you want.
Is there something about your Trutrac that you don't like? How does it behave in the rain? Like if you purposely wanted to fishtail at low speed wit the tires spinning? Always 2 striped during burnout? I only hear positives about Truetrac, are there any negatives?
