Default 80E w/shift kit 3rd gear hole size

I'm tired of dealing with a harsh 1-2 and 3-4 to get a decent feeling 2-3 shift. Even using the shift firmness tables the 2-3 shift still isn't what it should be. I drilled all three holes to the same size, 0.086 inches. I've got the instructions in front of me and its looking like I should drill the hole for 3rd gear shift firmness out to .096 inches and possibly even .120 inches. I have a stock converter so shift firmness gets magnified pretty easy but has anyone done this on their 80E to get a correct feeling shift on the 2-3? Vince?

With the feed hole sizes you have drilled I would think that you would not have harsh shifts for the 2nd and 4th shifts. However you are right on with the factory converter making them more noticeable. I find on the dyno that usually the 1-2 shift is the one that is the weakest of the three. What I would suggest is to set your line pressure tables back to the factory settings to see if that helps any. Also check to see what the actual max pressure is at the pressure port by the linkage at wot. Try to keep it a 180psi and it should be ok. As for the 3rd gear shift you might be having an issue with the direct clutch so that would explain a crappy shift. I'm not a tuner so I really can't help you with the programing side of what you are trying to accomplish. Bets of luck. Vince

Sure did.

The transmission is used, high mileage but the clutches that I could see looked great. That being said there was a lot of trash in the pan though. I called transgo over the removal of the reverse check ball and they said removing it allows the direct clutch to be fed from both sides. That being said is it possible the direct clutch needs a little more volume to have the same feel as the other clutches? I actually am running stock line pressure tables with the exception that in the areas below 25% I increased the pressure quite a bit to prevent any potential slippage. In doing so it made the 2nd and 4th shift that much harder and I have had to pull up to 70 psi to make the shifts about right and at the same time add up to 80 psi to make the 3rd shift feel right. The adding and subtracting was done using the shift firmness tables.

I did .086 on the first 80e kit I installed. Went .096 on 2-3 and 3-4 this last one. Shifts are just how I like them. Good and firm. I also went up to .086 on the 1-2 the second one and wish I hadn't. Its a bit to hard for my tastes now.

I have adaptive shift on all the shifts.

I hate to drop the VB off over one hole but I was planning on changing the filter again anyway and its not much more work to pull the VB off. Maybe I will and try .096 for 3rd gear and see if it improves anything. IIRC all three holes were predilled to .086 and if not I drilled them to that because I circled .086 on the instructions.

I usually do .70-.80 on 1-2, and .96 on 2-3 and 3-4. I think the converter is whats making the shifts so firm. Did you adjust the PC when you did the install? What all have you done in the tune as far as tranny wise? You can send me it and I can look it over if you would like.

This is on my 95, OBD1. I am running the 4L80E off a slightly modified 4L60E code. The reason for this is the Mass air code was written for a 4L60E and rather then attempt to redo it for a 4L80E I did it this way and it works just fine. I haven't touched the pressure control solenoid either. Just doing line pressure changes through the chip.
