Another 4l60e tbi question
Hi all
New to site that I happened to stumble upon via google. A huge wealth of information here from what I gather.
Here's my question...I have a 1995 chevy 2500 350 4x4 that has a 4l60e. Presently I cant afford to get a rebuild so I am looking for a used tranny. What years will interchange into this truck for a simple R&R? From what I've heard if its the tranny is not correct it may create havoc with the solenoids.
Thanks
Stan

Stan welcome to performance trucks! I'm a little confused because in your title you mention 4l60E however in your post you say 4l80E. Which is it?
If you have a 4l60e then you will need a 95 4x4 unit with a 6 bolt inspection cover. The electronics and other components in this year are year specific and you must use a 95 transmission with the correct case for your application.
If you have a 4l80E then my question would be what year unit do you have? As far as the bell housing is concerned any unit 98 or later will work.
However the transmission cooler lines might be an issue. In 96 or later both cooler fittings are in the front of the case near the dipstick tube. This is what I would can a front lube unit.
In 97 and 98 units the return cooler oil line is mounted in the center of the case. This is what we would refer to as center lube.
Also the first couple years of the 4l80E the transmission wiring harness was different. The early style had a torx bolt that kept the vehicle wiring connector fastened to the case connector harness.
In the later years the bolt was omitted and there were locking tabs on the vehicle wiring harness connector. When this happened the internal transmission harness changed as well.
Both of these models will bolt up but depending on what cooler line setup and wiring harness, you might have to modify them. Good luck getting your vehicle up and running again. If there is anything Finish Line Transmissions aka FLT can do for you please feel free to contact us. Vince

Thanks for the welcome & valuable information. The correct transmission in question is the 4l60e. So no other year besides a 1995 will work with wire/comp mods I take it??? Had a great deal on a rebuilt that came out of a 1994. By chance if I found a 1995 4l60e 4x4 from an s-10 would that work? Not sure if s-10's even have them but weighing my options.
How involved is the conversion from a different year?
Sorry for all the questions. I would like to get this done right the first time.

Sorry for the late reply. You will need to use a 95 unit for it to be correct. The issue with using a unit from a s10 is the bell housing is different. Your unit should have a 6 bolt inspection cover and the s10 will be a four. You will need to find a unit of the same type of truck for it to bolt right in and work. Vince
Spmeone had told me a tranny from a full size '94 would work but am relunctant on taking a chance. How can other full size trannys be modified to accept my application?
