Default Autotrac switch question.....

Hey all,
On my 1999 Z71 autotrac, when I put it in 4-Hi I can hear it move the transfer case but the front tires do not pull. In 4-Lo again it moves the transfer case and its very obviously in LOW but the front doesnt pull.
Whats weird is, when I hit AUTO 4X4 the front will pull when It is needed and then sticks in 4-wheel drive and trips "service 4x4 soon" and wont shift out of AUTO on the switch. If I turn the truck off and wait a couple minutes and then turn it back on, it will shift back into 2-Hi....

I was thinking it was the front actuator, but it will engage in AUTO when the rear tires slip, but then it wont disengagde intill I turn the truck off. Another wierd thing is one time I got it stuck in AUTO and got pissed and let the truck sit overnight, the next day the battery was dead. Like even when the truck was turned off it was trying to dissengage something and spent the battery. Transfer case is a NP246 and 1 years old, front is IFS electric actuator... any tips?

thanks
