autotrac troubles
Got a problem I'm hoping you guys can help me figure out. I recently stripped the sunshell in my 99 Z71's 4L60E. I decided to rebuild it on my own with some upgrades and lots of advice from Vince at FLT. My first tranny rebuild went well, though I did learn a few things the hard way, and it works awesome. One little problem though. Something went a little heywire with the transfer case motor or something when I put it all back together. When the installation was complete and I fired it up it acted as if the transfer case was stuck between gears and there were no buttons lit up on the selector on the dash. We messed with it awhile to no avail and ended up pulling the motor off of the transfer case. When I did I switched the transfer case into gear with a wrench and went ahead and drove it to test out the trans. All is well except I'm stuck in 4wd all the time. The next chance I got I bench tested the motor which seems to work OK and put the truck back on the lift to fiddle with it some more. When I plugged it back in and turned on the key the motor ran and seemed to position itself wherever it though it needed to be and the 4lo light came on on the selector. However the position of the motor is nowhere close to the position of the transfer case shaft when it is really in 4 low. Can these things get out of sequence somehow? Any idea where I should start trying to sort this out? I hate to just start replacing stuff. Also this is the nvg 246 t-case and stuff I've read say its a part time case but I'm absolutely certain there are only positions for 4 lo N and 4 hi on this thing. I'm guessing when the button is in 2wd it just disengages the front axles and the transfercase is still in 4hi? Everything worked fine before I pulled the trans and I'm no shadetree mechanic so I'm pretty sure I didn't make some dumb mistake putting it back together (even the best of us screw up once in awhile though). Hope someone can help explain it to me. Thanks, Greg

Get out your owners manual and figure out how to put the transfer case motor in nuetral. Then rock your'e rear shaft with the tires off the ground and the trans in park untill you find neutral manually. Then bolt the motor back on. It may not work the service manual says to never actuate the motor when unatached to transfer case severe damage could occur. There is actually a 2wd position the clutch pac on the front output is just so tight it feels like the front driveshaft is engauged. When you're done unhook the battery for 20 seconds and the tccm will clear its codes. Good luck.
