Default Avalanche - Rear Axle Swap

OK so, it seems I have dstroyed my rear axle/gears... Feels like I can turn the Pinion yoke about a 1/4 to 1/5 inch with out turning the ring gear. i will open the dif cover up next weekend. I have/had 4.56's and an Eaton LSD.

But, I would rather swap a new axle in then spend money repairing the weak 10 bolt, expecially now that I have a Manual Transmission and putting quite a bit more power to the ground... Plus my 33x13.50R18 tires don't help matters... So, i don't need to fix something i will probably break again later...

What do you guys recomend I swap to? I was thinking of getting a GM 14 bolt from a 2500HD and seeing if i can get it set up for 6 lug wheels and disc brakes. Since i have coils and not leafs I know I am going to have to have some custom work done no matter what... Hell, maybe I should go for a 3500 Dualy axle for that super duty look! LoL

Keep in mind that my Avalanche weights in at 5,870lbs (have had it on a truck scale) so, i need something damn strong...

just curious why not the smaller 9.5 SF 14-bolt and swap your own disc brakes onto that axle?

why not one out of a 2500 Avalanche??? should have the same mounting points for the different suspension right??? or did they keep leaf springs on the 3/4 ton av's ??

riviarakid55, what do you mean by smaller 9.5 SF 14 bolt?

silver-mod-o, yea the 2500 AV's have leafs... Which would be a fairly easy swap, if you don't mind loosing the coils and I am not sure I am ready to go that route...

Part of main problem for me is cost but, yet I don't want to put money into a weak axle...

There's a 10.5" ring gear 14 bolt that is full floating (no c-clips) but it's nearly impossible to get 6 lug axles on it and look good at the same time. You would need new wheels most likely and that's not what you want to get into.

I swapped my 10 bolt for a 9.5" ring gear 14 bolt that is semi floating (has c-clips). It's plenty strong! It's what I would recommend for a tougher axle that is practical to swap.

You are going to have to grind off the coil spring perches and shock mounts then weld them onto the new axle. If cost is an issue... plan very carefully. It will get expensive quickly. (gears, limited slip, install kit, etc.)

GM made a 9.5" with 6 lug axles for OBS Z71's, they are just getting harder to find. Look for one of those out of a 4WD vehicle and you will be off to a good start.

How about the NBS escalade ext has the optional 14 bolt rear coil set up with the 6 lug bolt pattern and 4.10 gears...

the chronic basically said it all. i doubt even at your horsepower levels you could break a 14bolt 9.5 like what i have or the vho's have. they are pretty indestructible from what ive heard. heck you could find an 04 vho 14 bolt as that was the only year it came with disc brakes. or quik has done the swap as have a couple others of taking they're 10 bolt calipers/backing plates, rotors, etc off and they will bolt up to the 14 bolt with little trouble.

This part you said in bold, this will modify any 2003-2006 14 bolt to give my 6 lug bolt pattern for my wheels? Sorry, i am a little stupid on axle stuff... I have found some 14 bolts from 2500HD truck here and there for around $500 used, if i can transfer parts from my axle to make the wheels fit and all i have to do is have the mounts for the springs and trailing arms fabed up that would be great!!!
