Axle / Brakes swap questions
The truck is an '06 1500 2wd. Huge factory stock front discs, unremarkable stock rear drums. I have a choice of 2 axles, neither of which I've seen. I can have a 4.10:1-geared 2500 axle, for $600, or I can have a dually axle, for $1700. I'm pretty sure the dually axle is rear disc brakes, and no, the matching proportioning valve doesn't come with it, dammit.
The truck normally tows a 4000+ pound trailer, but will be used to carry a slide-in camper, and then driven by a not-good driver. I'll be having to do without my truck for a couple of weeks each year, hoping it makes it home.
What I'm thinking is, if the brake issue could be resolved, run the dually axle from now on, but not spend $2400 on a dually bed with the flares. Let the extra width of the camper cover the outer tires when the camper is on, and just remove the outer tires the other 50 weeks each year. Looking silly isn't a concern. My stock front tire size, 245/70R17, is 30.5" diameter, so I could run LT215/85R16, load range E, on the back, they're 30.4", close enough.
What does anyone suggest, what can anyone tell me about the brake issue with either axle choice?
