Default Black Transmission fluid

Anybody know what this means? I read that alotof guys getting their trans from junkyard or salvaged vehicles find black fluid inside. How bad is this? Does this mean the clutched are fried or that the trans got too hot? I'm concerned about bolting a new converter up and screwing it up if the trans is messed up.

Yeah, I'd be concerned as well. It certainly can't be a good thing

If it's burnt up, at about the same time as you see the color, you'll definitely smell it. It will be very pungent to say the least. As far as black fluid, if you are junkyard shopping, check the fluid color before you buy it. If it's red & doesn't smell bad, you should be good. You should still change fluid/filter before you install a new converter.

I wouldnt bolt a new converter to a tranny with black fluid, the black color is most likely clutch material.

what do you guy think if I throw the old verter back on with fresh fluid. Then cycle it for a week or 2 then remove old fluid and replace verter with new one as well as new dex 6.

dammit i just put a shift kit in it. so what does black fluid typically state went wrong besides high temp and clutches? Could other parts of the trans been screwed up too? What if I had all the clutches replaced?

I cleaned the valve body out very thoroughly. The whole pump needs to be replaced? Can't it just be sprayed with brake cleaner?
