I have a gauge for that

if you open it up you will see there are a lot of small passageways inside. Before you open it, you need to get a couple worm clamps together from home depot to line it up perfectly when you put it back together or you will never get it seated back in the trans.

A lot of older transmission's fluid will be dark in color. That just means its old and has some wearage to it. And its a possibility its on its way out. If you have the ability to rebuild, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Because its just a matter of time before it will go out.

Oil will start to discolor within 1000 miles of use, im sure that tranny fluid is no different, just do like the guy said and clean it best you can and dump new fluids in it, If it was me I would change the fluids a couple times to get all the old **** out before you go in and put your new good fluid... but thats just me-

My truck has 32000 miles and the fluid looks and smells like it just came out of the bottle, tranmission fluid isn't like oil. If it looks or smells burnt, that means it is and so are the internals like the clutches. Thats not good on a 4l60, they can not hold up to heat.
