Default Brake Questions??

I pre-emptively bought front and rear pads the other day in prep for doing them this weekend. It looks like the stock pads still have 60-70% life left on them.
My truck has about 50k on it with the original pads. I was told by the guy at NAPA that the stockers are ceramic. I bought ceramic to do the job but think I'll be taking em back soon. The $160.00 can be used for my Eaton Posi in the next two weeks.

So are the stockers ceramic on an 02 4x4? and....
Why does my emergency brake pedal go all the way to the floor and feel soft when doing so? It never seems to get snug as you engage it.

Is there some special way to adjust the emergency brakes or are they self adjusting by going in reverse and engaging them at low speed kind of thing.
Could a fluid change help out and a bleeding?

My regular brakes seem to work fine, the pedal feels a little mushier than when it was new but never had an issue stopping.
Whats up guys??

I'm not sure of the composition of the stock pads. I replaced mine with the Hawk HPS's after 70k or so.

As for the "Emergency Brake", it's more of a parking brake. It's designed to keep the truck from rolling if it slips out of park, not to be used as an emergency brake. The few times when I've had mine engaged, I was able to drive/back out with it engaged with very little effort.

Your Emergency Brakes Are Completely Diff.and If You Can Go To The Floor You Need To Check Them Cause A Rear Rotor Is Not Cheap.we See This Ever Week You Need An 18mm And A Breaker Baryou Will Either Ajdust Them Are Replace Them.as For As Your Front Brakes They Will Last You Till About 100k Depends On Your Driving.

I Would Check Them Soon (emergency Brakes)

There's actually a TSB about the parking brake shoe retaining clips breaking and the shoe shifts and doesn't hold right...this happened to mine. If it goes too long, it could wipe out the inside drum of the rotor. (The parking brake assemblies are inside the rear brake rotor hub area...they are horseshoe shaped shoes) The new clips come with the parking brake shoe assemblies. The factory pads are ceramic for longevity and noise and dust reduction. I installed performance pads from Praise Dyno and felt a noticeable improvement (along with cryogenically treated slotted rotors). I've heard great things about the Hawk pads also.

I have G1 Sloted and drilled rotors and the Hawk HPS pads, I would say my stopping is at least 20% better than stock.

Mine did the same thing - it just needed adjusting. I'm not sure if they are self-adjusting, I did mine manually when replacing the rotors a couple months ago.

After the adjustment, much better. It will hold the truck and the pedal does not go all the way to the floor now.

My stock pads were Ceramic and lasted quite a while. I replaced them at 40K due to rotor warping and decided to go with Praise Dyno all around. I replaced the pads at theat time and they still had 50% pad left.

As for the parking brake...what a lame design. They are NOT self adjusting. Adjusting requires removing the caliper and rotor and spinning the star wheel until you can BARELY get the rotor back on. I adjust mine every 10K or so. There is, as mentioned, a tsb about a defective clip. I replaced mine with the new design. Also, be careful as the pedal is designed to go to the floor even with fresh rotors and ebrake pads. This is their "Easy Apply" method....lame again. The adjuster on the cable IS NOT the ebrake adjust. If the pedal goes to the floor but it holds while in drive, it is working as designed.

Lastly, I bleed mine EVERY year as they will accumilate moisture and boil. Also the water tends to pool in the lower extremities of the braking system. When that happend, parts start rusting and that is never a good thing.
