Broke my tranny yesterday. HELP
Hey guys. I have a 2005 Silverado Z71 and when I was driving yesterday I was at about half throttle or less and I heard a big bang. Now the only gears that I have are reverse, 1st, and 2nd. Does anyone know what could have possibly broken. Im hoping I already have a good lead on an old GM tranny specialist to rebuild it and I was just going to buy the parts. I obviously know that you can't know exactly whats wrong until its opened up, but I was gonna go ahead and buy some parts and just seeing if you all think I need anything else. I am going to buy a heavy duty sunshell, billet or vette servos, the kevlar 3-4 band, and whatever is exactly broken Anything else? Im not going to dump a bunch of money into things just to upgrade at this point. I just bought the truck about 2 months ago and it only has 50k miles on it- which just makes me sick. Anyone think they have a good idea of what might have broke. I am pretty mechanically inclined, but I don't know dick about auto trannys. Thanks for any help guys.

Yes, its only manual 1st and 2nd. If I put it in drive it wont do anything except roll down a hill. Is there a good write up for tranny removal for a 4x4? I just peeked under the truck and it looks like the crossmember that contains the torsion bars will be in the way to lower the tranny. Do I have to remove the torsion bars so I can remove that back crossmember?

No you don't need to remove the torsion bar cross member. If you take the transfer case off the tranny first, you can slide it back until the studs clear the adapter, and then move it over and forward and it will then drop down in front of the cross member. Then you can drop the tranny.
