Default Building a 4l80e to back a 4bta Cummins

Hey guys...

Just a couple questions...

I'm getting ready to back my 4bta cummins with a 4l80e in my '03 tahoe. The motor will be compound boosted in the near future... shooting for no more then 550rwtq which will be around 250whp peaking under 3200rpm

Will a stock rebuild with a good cooler handle the power? I see that 500hp is the limit on a stock 4l80e... however hp isnt what breaks parts...

Will the hardparts hold up to that in stock form?

Could someone suggest a good rebuild kit for this application?

I know the 80e backed the 6.5 and the detuned duramax in the express vans... I'm pretty sure they didnt have anything special done to them to hold up...

Opinions?

Thanks guys
-Chris

A stock 80e will be fine. I run a stock one with a shift kit and I make a good bit more power than that.

500hp (on a gas motor) is where it starts hurting the 3rd gear clutches, not the hard parts. Some shift kits fix this. I have, however, seen a stock 6.0L break a stock input shaft towing very heavy loads.

I have a rebuild 80e with a shift kit and a few internal mods in my truck. It's pushing about 650 hp to the wheels. It's just an estiment though since I can't put my truck on a Dyno.

Hmm... well the tahoe its going in is north of 6500 lbs... 3.73s and 35" rubber

The 4l60e didnt seem to mind too much... the converter didnt like it at all... but that was at stock power level which is around 120hp and 3-- lb. ft. Once the compound turbo setup is done and I turn the fuel up a bit... that would be a different story.

The stock 6.5 that these backed without issue where at 195hp and 430 lb. ft.

The detuned duramax in the express vans (using an 85e) run around 250hp and 460 lb. ft.

So... with all that being said... I'm not going to be pulling extreme loads... the most I would be pulling is probably around 8k (car trailer and mud truck) and it wouldnt happen very often... once a year if that for out of town trips... Plus it would be driven accordingly... which would mean roughly a 15k total weight.

Thoughts?

I'm sent an e-mail to Jakes Performance... had read several different places that it was the place to go for a well priced rebuild "kit" which supposively he pieces together according to your needs... waiting to hear back from him...

Also was looking at this...
4L80E Rebuild Kit Heavy Duty 1997-Early 2001 :: 4L80E ---- 4L80ETRANSMISSIONS.com :: GM Rebuild Kits :: Pro-Built Automatics

It looks to be pretty complete, uses bw clutches and bands... and includes a transgo update package... along with several other updates.

Also planning on runing a large tru-cool cooler setup... ditching the stock junk all together... and a higher cap. pan since the pan that came with my trans is junk.

Still no word from jakes... however I did get the trans up on the work bench today and got it ready to start disassembly.

Hopefully I'll hear back soon so I can decide which route to go...

Does anyone have any input on the rebuild kits?
