Default C1500

Hey all. I’m new to Chevy and this small block I have. I have a 4.3 vortec with an nv3500 trans. It’s a 94 c1500 and The clutch wines and grinds when I put it in reverse. It shifts decent at speed but it resists a little when I put it in first at lights. It feels like the clutch isn’t fully engaging and I’m not used to a Chevy I used to drive a Honda lol. Do I need to replace the clutch? What clutch would be best? I’m open to anything and if I can I’d like to put a lightweight flywheel while I’m at it as well

How many miles on it? Sounds more like the synchros are worn out

it’s got under 60k so I wouldn’t think the synchros would be out

"Clutch whines and grinds" is NOT caused by "synchros".

More likely, it needs a pilot bushing or bearing. Might need a clutch as well but that will more usually start to slip, in high gear under high load, as it wears out, not "whine and grind" shifting into reverse & first.

at 60k it shouldn't need a clutch either, yet here we are

I wouldnt rule out transmission wear, but a stock replacement clutch and flywheel are the way to go. No reason to reinvent the wheel for a 200hp v6 2wd truck

I sold my '96, same specs, to a guy to pull a camper. He told me that it should be able to tow more than a truck with an automatic because the limitation of an automatic is the torque converter. I told him that he would ruin this truck and he should look for a 2500. He said don't worry about it, he is good with a clutch. He paid cash.

So yeah, 60,000 and needs a new clutch and transmission is definitely possible.

I DID NOT say "his transmission is fine".

What I DID say was, "Clutch whines and grinds" is NOT caused by "synchros". The transmission might have other symptoms that DO mean it's bad; might need a rebuild; might just need a heavier duty truck to begin with; but...

"Clutch whines and grinds" is NOT caused by "synchros".

More likely, it needs a pilot bushing or bearing to fix THAT PARTICULAR set of symptoms. If that's all that's wrong with the truck, then "synchros" won't fix it, anyway. He can change "synchros" every single day from now till the Second Coming, and TWICE on Sundays just for good measure, and "clutch will still whine and grind".

Of course, to get to the pilot, you have to disassemble the clutch. Makes good sense regardless to lay aside the old stuff and put in new. Which is not the same as "needs a clutch".
