Circle D converter Q's yes yet more converter questions!
Ok I called Chris yesterday and after talking to him im more confused than ever. Ive got a ex cab 4x4 5.3 with 275/70 17 tires and 3.42 gears.
So far ive got the exhaust, homemade intake, and custom tuned via HP tuners.
I know got sitting Sonnax billet servos, alum accumilator pistons.
Im also going to buy a transgo HD2 shift kit and the PCM for less larger trans cooler.
Now comes the converter
I was orginally going to go with the 278mm 395.00 Circle D converter in 3200 stall. Accoridng to Chris with the little taller tire it will make my converter stall to 3200rpm when behind a 5.3 they stall to 3000.
Then I looked at the 258mm billet in 32-3400rpm. Which Chris said the 278mm would do fine but I really want it to make a difference. In older thread I read that the 258mm will perform better, with better performance. However, with it being a little smaller it will feel a litttle looser.
I just dont want to install the reworked TB converter and loose .2-.4. Im looking for a converter that will drop .5-.7 off my et. I know the custom built one will perform better but in my setup will I gain anything from it? Is there any vids out there of stock cam silverados with the 278mm? Or is there some with track results from a stock converter to the 278mm?
In the future id like to install a TR220 cam. I think the the 258mm will do better with that cam.
Heck I dont know what do you guys think???

How big of a check do you want to write and what do you really want out of the truck. That's what it all comes down to... The 278mm 3200 is a nice converter and I like to refer to it as a good "starter" converter. But the 258mm would gain a little more on the track especially with that cam. As mentioned, get it in about a 3600 stall speed and you'll be happy with the results. A multi disk converter (Chris happens to make one of the best, if not THE best out there for our trucks) will let you lock it up at the top of the track and get even better results

Im leaning towards the 258mm unit now. Now I dont tow at all with this truck, how would the single disk work in it compared to the multi disk?
Really other then locking up, what are the performance advantages of the multi disk?

That is the main advantage. You'll be suprised what locking a converter in 3rd on the track will do for your e/t and mph... It's not advised to ever lock a single disk under WOT power simply because the clutch material is not big enough. The multi disk adds tons of surface area and shouldn't bat an eye when you lock it up under power fo that extra tenth or two off your time. It's all about how fast you really want to be and how deep your pocket is.

What other information are you looking for? I've pretty much broken it down as simply as possible and answered the question? What else do you need to know?
