A higher stall converter will limit the shift drop but it does nothing for actual acceleration. I know back in the 70's and 80's a lot of the drag racers were running Power Glide Transmissions because they only had two gears and they had a close ratio. I had one in my 10 second Nova. If any of you guys have ever driven a close ratio tranny compared to a standard street geared automatic you would know what I mean. Its like going from a 3.08 to a 4.10 rear gear but that thrust and pull is there in each gear.

I was just wandering if it could be or had been done with an electronic transmission. It was just a thought. I think a heavy truck would benefit from closer ratios. IMO.

I wish I didn't have an overdrive now. I like my final gear to be one to one. But I guess it helps mileage, like I care about that!

Its not just mileage but the lower rpms help the longitivity of the engine.

Thumbs up

I'm not disagreeing with that, but I would think that all that lugging around at low rpm and constant downshifting would be harder on the drive train...?

Lugging at low end is actually rough on the engine b/c the timing, etc. However, if you don't have any knock, then you should be fine and should be a problem. The constant downshift...not really unless you constant WOT it and break traction and catchs.
