conclusion - burnt 2nd?
so i finally got my second gear working, and got my reverse back too.
i installed a shift kit, sonnax 2nd and 4th servos, aluminum pistons and plastic check *****. after i was done i had no 2nd gear.
ordered new seperator plate and gaskets. checked everything, everything looked good. still no 2nd. took it down again, remembered that the solenoid for 1-2 shift had fell on teh floor when i was doing the shift kit, due to the spring behind it. i swaped the two solenoids with each other. i then remembered that the 2nd acumulator piston was a tight fit. i checked it and put the plastic one back in since that one moved in the bore, while the aluminium one did not.
i now have all my gears, although sometimes it takes a while to shift to 2nd, and when in 2nd it slips. just revs up. im thinking since i drove a week with no 2nd gear, i may of been burning it up at that time.

Funny you should mention the aluminum 1-2 piston didn't move as well in the housing. I have the same issue. I"m taking apart my trans today, in hopes of finding no breakage (but not likely). Since I don't have 4th along with no 2nd, I'm sure something else is toast. What's the deal with the aluminum 1-2 accumulator piston not sliding easier than it does? I realize the seal is dry and all, but I had to put a bit of force on it make the piston slide. Maybe it's better since it's been heat-cycled since the initial install.

yes. there is a second gear servo and a 4th gear servo in there and i have installed the 2nd gear servo backwards and it would go into 2nd but if i put any presure on it it would start slipping or fall out of gear and it would take it forever to shift into second.
