Converter swap without shift kit
#21
You may already know this, but check with the manufacturer of the converter about the pulse width modulation (PWM) function for the torque converter clutch (TCC). Not all stalls have a clutch material that can live with PWM... basically you need to either 1) install PWM eliminator valve (cheap, ~$20) 2) take the stock PWM valvetrain out and replace the spring with an inner pump slide spring (superior also sells this spring), or 3) have a tuner program out the PWM function by basically shutting off the PWM solenoid (duty cycle settings). All three will disable PWM and give you a firm and fast TCC lock up.
Even if the stall can live with PWM, I'd disable it anyway cause it always wears out the bore in the valvebody with miles and kills the transmission. IMO all automakers should be b!tch sl@pped for using variable lockup functions!
