Default Crush Sleeve issue

Man I cant say how much I hate installing rearends. I think it's because the lack of info on the yukon instructions I have. This is my first time so I need exact step by step instructions. Anyway, anybody have trouble with the crush sleeve? I can't get my pinion preload correct because my impact is a cheap craftsman. On the yukon gear install manual it said that you might have to put 3-400ft/lbs of pressure. I believe I should be over that because I have about 3' length with the cheater bar and I can bench around 345 but using only one hand would bring that down to about 170. Isn't the rule for cheater bars: 1'=100ft/lbs?so what gives? Both pinion races are fully seated, I pressed the bigger of the two pinion bearings all the way on the pinion. I placed the pinion inside the diff with the large bearing and crush sleeve then from the other side I put on the smaller bearing, yoke, washer then pinion nut. I left off the seal as i didn't want it to get damaged.
FYI I had to install the carrier so I could put my axles in in order to use my brakes. I didn't have enough leverage with the pipe wrench nor did I have a good grip on both toke pinion nut.

I feel your pain! I just did a front and rear gear swap on a 09 Jeep CJ it took heating the crush sleeve up and slaming everything back together then throwing some lube on the threads and having at it with the biggest 1/2 inch IR impact we had. I think it is advertized at 580 ft/lbs forward 780 ft/lbs reverse torque!!! Did I mention the compressor was set at 150psi.

Here's a good gear swap write-up that axisT6 made for us, hope this helps:

I just did my gear swap, used my 18v cordless snap-on impact, worked like a champ. It did have to hammer for a few seconds tho!

Thanks Bud but there wasn't anything on axis' thread that went more into depth about the crush sleeve.

sometimes the crush sleeve can be a pita. just give it hell. once you get it started it will get easier. i good impact usually makes it easier.

I have broken a breaker bar on them before. I have reused many crush sleeves for this reason. I would peen it with a hammer on the gear shaft to flatten it out a hair and install. Several rear ends in high hp applications have survived this.

the crush sleeve lets you tightin your pinion nut with out pre loading the pinion bearing too much . it also holds pre load on them . no you can not use the old one the preload is measured in roatating friction . not torque on the nut . once the crush sleeve starts to crush you need to measure how much "inch pounds" it takes to get the yoke to rotate . i beleive its like 20 inch pounds . so with no load on the rear end when you spin the yoke it should have slight drag 20 inch pounds this is without the carerer in the housing . kinda like doing a wheel bearing. lube up the crush sleeve put a 48 inch pipe wrench on the yoke to hold it then i use a 3/4 inch drive breaker and a 4 foot jack handle cheater .
