the crush sleeve lets you tightin your pinion nut with out pre loading the pinion bearing too much . it also holds pre load on them . no you can not use the old one the preload is measured in roatating friction . not torque on the nut . once the crush sleeve starts to crush you need to measure how much "inch pounds" it takes to get the yoke to rotate . i beleive its like 20 inch pounds . so with no load on the rear end when you spin the yoke it should have slight drag 20 inch pounds this is without the carerer in the housing . kinda like doing a wheel bearing. lube up the crush sleeve put a 48 inch pipe wrench on the yoke to hold it then i use a 3/4 inch drive breaker and a 4 foot jack handle cheater .

lol yeah its a pain you can only get like a 1/8th of a turn at a time . once it starts to crush you can take off the cheater and tightin a lilttle bit then rotate , then tightin and keep rotateing till you get the pre load you need . i had the cheater going out the driver side then you can push down "stand on it lol." you wil feel it crush and start to get easyer .

I've done the same 4 or 5 times with no problem at all. Like TurboGibbs stated though for the guys that arent quite as experienced with it I would definately recommend just using a new crush sleeve.
