I like the Detroit, it locks up very nicely. The traction is actually not too bad on wet roads either.

I REALLY like my 4.10's with my 31" tires. RPM's on the highway at 70mph are around 2,200, maybe 2,300. Nothing at all. Just in the early part of my cams powerband.

My truck pulls smooth and hard well up into the 110+ range with no fuss at all. It just GOES. It seems to pull hardest from 80-100.

I've been getting about 18mpg lately - which is decent for my mods right now. I used to get into the low 20's, before I dug into the motor.

If I didn't have a front diff to worry about - I'm not joking in the least bit when I say I would _DEFINITELY_ be running 4.56's by now. I love the feeling of deep gears - I love tearing quickly through the RPM range of a gear. I love the "leverage" the gears provide to let you cruise up hills in OD with little throttle.

I'm quite confident I'll never own another vehicle with gears lower than 4.10's in this tire-size range.

Also, I wanted to note an example of what lower gearing does...

I have a late model sportbike. Stock, it would barely skim the front tire across the pavement in 2nd gear, at WOT.

I don't remember the exact factory gearing, but I know I'm pretty close here when I say it was 2.68:1. 16 tooth front sprocket, 43 tooth rear.

I added two teeth to the rear sprocket. 16/45 = 2.81:1

Going WOT in 2nd, the front would now consistantly lift up under it's own power.

Basically, lower gearing multiplies more of the engines force, to the wheels.

I went from 3.42's to 4.10's with 31' tall tires. My RPM on the freeway at 70 jumped from just below 2000 to just over. I havent done enough freeway driving to really figure mileage but my city driving mileage went up.

I do reserve the right to be wrong. I was just passing on what my friends and family have shared with me about higher gear ratio's. They likened to putting a six speed into 6th gear in a race... it simply made sense to me since most will even raise their shift points so that they cross the quarter at the top of the lowest gear they can manage.
Maybe Im lost.... wouldnt be the first time

I'm definitely not saying I'm right all the time. I get pretty passionate about mods/setups I like - and I love low gearing.

What do you mean about the 6th gear thing?

If I were to word it in my train of though - 4.10's would be like driving in 5th, while 3.73's would be like driving in 6th. Is that what you meant?

I definitely hear the thing about shift points and which gear to cross at. I'd hate to be going for a shift just before the lights or something... In that case I WOULD consider going to a taller gear (with maybe more stall?).

I'm running 4.56s with 29" tires it's a little noisey[the exhaust] but talk about throttle response this baby is incredable it moves right now when you give it just a little gas.The fuel milage did suffer a little[about 15mpg highway and 11 in town]but with my heavy right foot I'm used to that.I say go for it and get the 4.11s,you won't regret it.

i run 4.10's and i drive a lot on the Istate. they do fine for me, i don't mind the extra rpms that it causes. someone up there gave exactly what mine run at doing 70 and such. i do have 31 inch tires but i will be moving to 29" as soon as i can. then we'll see if my taste change.
