Default Detriot TrueTrac install writeup...

I installed my detriot truetrac on Saturday, here are a few comments on the install.

The total install including cleaning up and farting around took me 7 hours in my driveway. This is the first rear I have ever taken apart, so I assume with some more experience the job could be done in a reduced amount of time. Overall the install wasn't all that hard. It was time consuming measuring the shim pack and assembling the correct height for first a snug fit and then the preload fit.

The factory ring gear was bolted in without any evidence of thread locker, so when I installed the gear on the TT, I used new bolts, no thread locker, and I torqued it 65 lb-ft outside the car and retorqued it to 85 lb-ft in the rear housing. The factory manual calls for 89 lb-ft torque spec. I then torqued the bearing caps per the factory spec, 55 lb-ft.

My initial stock backlash was 0.0065" on average around the ring gear. I was able to get the new setup to have a 0.007" backlash with a 0.007" of bearing preload. The diff went in pretty snug with the preload. I definitely had to tap the shim stack in with a hammer. The only thing was if I really yanked and yanked on the carrier, I was able to get it to move.

I filled the diff with 80/90 valvaline dino oil for the 500 mile break in period. Once completed, I will refill it with Mobil One.

Results:

I have put around 100 miles on the diff and it seems to be working great. I can't hear any gear noise or whine and it drives around town like a stock open diff. I haven't tested its limited slip capabilities yet, but I plan on doing that after the break-in period.

I assume that I installed it correctly since there is no apparent gear noise?

TrueTrac is very quiet, most of the time I can't tell it's there, and the transition from open to locked is smooth. If I gun it as I start to straighten out from turning a corner the inside wheel will spin for just a sec then the diff will lock and I'll slide out a little bit. It's very smooth, and I don't feel any clunking or anything. You'll definitely like yours.

Cool, So it looks like I did ok... now the real question. Should I hit the track on Saturday with the new setup? I'll only have like 200 miles on it, should I run it or wait to complete my 500 miles?
