Did I Lose the Tranny or Converter?

I don't remember what converter you have but if it's a good triple disk it should feel like another gear when it locks. If it does not then the lockup settings need adjusted because it's slipping the converter clutch on engagement.

Do NOT skimp out when it comes to installing the transmission and converter. Triple check all your clearances. Install the dipstick and pull the transmission pan before filling with fluid. Measure the distance from the bottom of the dispstick to the interface of the pan and case. That is the proper fluid level. The upper end of "full" on my stock dipstick was well under this level.

I know with my trans mounted in my truck the fluid level on the dipstick had to be about 1/4" above the full mark to really be full. Checked this by removing pan with dipstick in and marking dipstick based on vavle body to case mating surface. Like GMCtrk mentioned you typically need a extra .5-1qt. When the trans is installed you want the full fluid level to be at the same point as the valve body to case mating surface.
