Default Is this Driveshaft guy smoking crack or what?

Well i called up Driveshaft Specialist in San Antonio to see what he recommended for my driveshaft for my truck... This guy said i needed a 5inch Aluminum shaft if i am going to be crossing the traps at 105-110 (mods in sig)... He said a steel shaft would come apart and be no good....

If I had a nickle for every time I heard a story like that from a "specialist", I would be able to rebuild my broke-*** 6.0 free of charge.

We run 3.5 steel shafts in cars that go 150mph in the 1/8th, 170+ in the 1/4...

I've been 140+ in my truck ALOT with a stock steel shaft

whats your DS length? those guys are very nice and good to deal with unlike every other driveshaft company i talked to. they do make steel shafts but he prob figured you would be out of critical speed range with the steel. ive had my 5" alum 72" long shaft from them over 6k rpm with not a hint of a problem. top notch in my book

the nascar guys turn 9-10k rpm for hours on end with a 4" steel shaft but they are only 44" long. the shorter, bigger dia, and lighter they are the faster you can spin them hence the reason why the alum one is 5" dia. although i do not think a steel one would come apart at that speed (depends on your rear gear and tire size) the 5" alum would be the safer piece

When I bought my first steel 3" shaft from Denny's they said that is the same shaft they run in the 2500 Ho car that goes 220 on their web page. That was years ago, and I think they changes their page, but you get the idea.

Yes i believe they are freebaseing.

Sounds like they care more about their wallet than what will work for you.

I feel a 3.5 '' steel shaft is stronger/ just as safe as a 5'' alum. Both would be fine for you .

well I just got a driveshaft from them, and they were SUPER nice to deal with. Told me for my driveshaft lengh, which was 48.5inches (4x4 rcsb), the critical driveshaft speed is 15,000+ rpms, he actually gave me a hard figure but I cant remember it.

Im not sure if you mentioned your driveshaft's lengh because that has ALOT to do with what they would recommend, I asked for the best they could offer which is why I ended up with the 5x .125 aluminum driveshaft. They do make them in 3,4,5 inches im sure if you tell them you just want to be safe up to 110-120mph they could figure something out for you. Plus I dont know why people mention RPM when engine RPM has nothing to do with the driveshaft speed, its driveshaft RPM thats important and you can reverse calculate the speed by using your tire diameter and rear end ratio or using engine rpm, and gear ratio.
