Extra labor for gear + posi, instead of just posi?

yea it is not like you just pull one more gear out. sure anyone can do it but proper gear setup is the key. the actual work is not bad it is the setup. the 1100 sounds about correct.

Looking at my invoice, I paid this:
OEM Gears: $180.00
Eaton Posi: $350.00
Bearing Overall Kit: $90.00
Axle Bearings/Seals: $30.00
Freight: $29.00
Total= $709.00
Labor rates are different, but in the Bay Area they are like $90.00/hr. At $55.00/hr, you should be able to do the job for around $950.00. PM if you want the palce where I got the parts. They came fast and didnt have to pay tax.

i am not clowning on any of you but i love how everyone thinks it is going to be cake. ok yes all the work is cake i agree and have done it. you can use a paste to set them up but i am the type of person who wants to learn it first hand. some of the guys that have been doing it forever can do it fast. but i am telling you the settup is the most important part. if you get lucky you can use the same shims but i would not count on that. as far as price i would say between the 9something and 1100. of coarse if you know a tech or something you can get it done on the side cheeper.

If you're doing just a carrier swap, then the pinion gear is left un-touched. You unbolt the carrier, and and ring gear. Install the ring gear on the new carrier. Then you have re-install the carrier and make sure its shimmed properly, by checking the back-lash and wear pattern. If you do a gear swap, then you obviously have to tear into the pinion gear. This is where the extra cost comes in. Not only do you have to do all of the above, but you have to screw with two more bearings, a crush sleave and more shimming. Doing gears also turns a lot of people off because of the "special tools" required. If you can build an engine, then you can confidently do gears.
FWIW the shop here charges $250 for a carrier swap and $350 for gears.
