I got the aluminum accumulator piston kit with my HD2.

There are 3 pistons. 1 for 4th, 1 for 2nd, and the third one fits onto the second accumulator shaft, but it's not in the HD2 instructions at all.

Any idea what it is for or how it's installed?

It's the one in the middle bottom.

That is the forward accumulator. That goes in the valve body under the metal cover with three bolts on it. Here is a picture with the valve body broke down for you.
