Factory M5 to T56 and Motor? Any suggestions!?!
I have a '02 reg. cab Silverado that was my DD til about a month ago when my factory M5 decided it didn't want to go any longer!!! So, now would be the most feasible time for me to make a few changes. Any advice on different routes to take as far as transmission/motor combos? What I'm thinking I want to do is to replace my transmission with a t56, and replace my 4.8l with a HO6.0l. But I'm smart enough to know that there are plenty more people on here who know more about these things than me, and any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, any links or contacts as far as good priced t56 transmission would help me greatly. I'm located in Louisiana. Thanks again!

T56 would be the way to go, check the F-body forums (like the sister site: ls1tech.com), you might pick one up. there has been several with this swap on the board. In fact, I think someone just pulled theirs and was selling a complete swap "kit", try to PM Vanilla Gorilla, I think that's who it was.

You need:
-Trans and shifter
-LS1 flywheel and clutch
-LS1 T56 Pilot brg (T56 uses the old syle pilot brg/bushing but so does the older NV3500 5 speeds. Yours being a 02, i'm thinking you should have the large ball bearing Pilot brg that goes in the outer lip of the crank. You need the smaller needle brg that goes further in.)
-T56 slave cyl. Your master cyl and line will work. You just have to take the quick coupler off and put the line directly into the slave.
-Custom driveshaft. The LS1 T56's use the TH350 style output yoke and the 5 speeds use the TH400 yoke. The Viper T56's have the TH400 style output. Also tranny's are a different length. Advice-don't skimp on the driveshaft. I had 2 modified by a local shop before I got smart enough to buy a real shaft that is HIGH SPEED BALANCED.

Are there any kits available so you can keep your stock shifter location? I'm not sure about anyone else, but I like my 40/20/40 & center console. Although TurboGibbs has a tight setup with the Tahoe seats/console?

mcleod makes adapter shifter for older model cars. I haven't done the measuring exactly but the one for a T56 in a 67 Camaro is the most forward mounting one. They didn't have these available when I was doing mine thus I don't know the details about how much more forward but they do use the forward access plate. I'd say at least 8" more forward but you will need ~12" to get it just like the 5 speed.
