FLT L5 4l70 took a dump today
was driving today casually when out of nowhere my rpm's starting going really high and felt alot of slipping. I believe i was in second when this happened. then i stopped and tried to get going again, same thing in first and a long time to get to second. top speed was about 25mph. i then parked it. park held fine. i tried reverse and just alot of rpm's with inches of movement and a bit of a clunking sound. I then had it towed home. Ive had the level 5 for about 2.5 years now and its mostly casual highway driving. i havent launched the truck or really even gone WOT in atleast 1.5 years. any ideas guys? i was thinking im just gonna take it to a local performance shop and see if they can diagnose it and go from there. thanks for any responses.

i think i just outgrew the speed when i got a bike. the truck turned more into a commuter that i drove easy because i had lost the need to drive that fast in it. either way i guess it didnt matter cause this tranny is toast. im just figureing out the cost of a 80e and weighing it against just putting in another built 70e.

Are you sure that your not getting a code that has put you into limp mode? If starting out in third gear it will definitely feel like a slipping transmission. I would look at the condition of the oil and make sure its full as well. Good luck on whatever direction you choose to go. Vince B

oh ya. i pulled over and scanned it immediately. no codes came up. im taking it in to a shop around town to be looked at next week. all in all im still pretty happy that i managed to get that tranny to last me 70k miles with the power im putting down in a big truck. im gonna wait and see what the diagnosis is until i make a decision on my next step. im just glad it didnt happen when i was out in the bush hunting.

Honestly, if it lasted 70k miles and 2.5 years in that combination I wouldn't get too much heartburn. 70k miles is a lot to ask of any automatic that see the power to weight that yours is seeing. Yeah it sucks that it's failed, but take your time and make the right decision for the money.
Good luck either way you go!
