So I just looked at my trans and converter and it looks like I have a problem. The converter looks to be about a 1/4 inch away from the flywheel. The flywheel has the spacer already on there and I have it on there correct. The crank is from scat I believe. I looked around but couldn't find any usefully info. I thought the converter had to be 1/8" away from the flywheel. Thanks for the replys.

If need be, you can fill the space with flat washers between the converter and flex-plate to gain the proper clearance you’re after and of course use the proper length bolts to match. You would not want to change the distance between the flex-plate and crankshaft, due to altering the starter engagement to the flex-plate, if that makes any sense.

Ah ok I see what you mean. Can the converter be moved forward??

When the converter is fully seated in the trans there should be at most 3/8" (i think) between the converter tabs and the flexplate. If there is more, you need to add shims so its within 1/8 and 3/8". You pull the converter slightly forward when bolting it to the flexplate. You want there to be some clearence both directions so nothing binds up.

Nice.!!! Thanks for the info, I didnt know if the converter could be moved. Thanks for clearing it up, guess I never really had sn issue in the first place as the converter is about 1/4 away from the flywheel. Getting a little closer to starting it.

A portion of a post from Vince:

After the transmission bellhousing bolts are tightened, check to see if the torque converter will turn by hand. Push the torque converter back into the transmission as far as it will go. Using feeler gauges or calipers measure the gap between the flexplate converter mounting pad and the torque converter mounting pad. If gap distance is between .060" and .187" it is OK to bolt up the torque converter. If the gap is greater than .187" install a .060" flat washer between the torque converter and flexplate.

1/8-3/16th. Just make sure the washers are the same thickness, cause they vary a lot.
