Default front end "clunk"/noise

I have an intermittent "clunking" noise in my front end. I have checked (and greased) all ball joints (all aftermarket units that can be greased) and they show no signs of play (couldn't force any wobble).

I have been reading for some time about the intermediate shafts being bad and also noticed a post about the lower steering gear bearings going bad at times.

This intermediate shaft "issue" stems from the steering column being "collapsible" right? With that in mind, COULD a person remove the intermediate shaft and weld the two sections (inner and outer) together thus making a solid unit that WOULD NOT move AT ALL (yes I understand this prevents collapsing of the column, just bare with me)?

In another post, someone put up a link to a link (summit) to a Borgeson Steering Shaft:

I'm rather tempted to go "all out" if I have to replace the shaft and do it "once and for all."

Any other input?

If you want a quick fix, unbolt the shaft and cycle it in and out a few times. This will stir the grease up, and the clunk should go away(for a while at least) I did this 10000 miles ago, and it hasn't clunked since.
