we used to replace them on a fairly regular basis here at work, but with the new body style trucks i've only seen one break. there were a few changes made to the newer one's.

it was a lot. pm him for some pics of his rear end when he took it apart. chunks of metal were everywhere. the gears actually survived but the g80 looked like a bomb that threw a bunch of shrapnel everywhere when he took the cover off.

I have blown 2 myself, but none in this truck. We used to get calls all the time at work for parts and assemblies, and I rarely sold them. I always upgrade the customer, whixh is funny because it was always cheaper.

I completely demoed the carrier. All the spider gears were in pieces, bent the center pin and cracked the carrier housing. Fortunately none of the shrapnel got logged between the ring and pinion so my gears were fine. I will put some pics up when I get home.

Here are a few pics...

I guess I better re-phrase the question. I dont plan on doing any major mods or racing the truck, so if I can get a G80 for free would it be worth it?? THANKS!!

If you stay stock HP, don't have a heavy truck, don't drive crazy, and just have an open diff right now, the G80 will be a nice upgrade.

i think the G80 will be fine up to 300 hp. thats my opinion. after that, i would start looking for an eaton or equivelant unit.
