4:10's will make it liveable to drive. Give up towing unless you plan on engine swap. That is unless you want to push it uphill with your SS while towing. The combo you have is a gas mileage only combo. The sad part is that more than likely the poor bastard is working so hard to move the truck the mileage is probably not all that great either. good luck

i wouldn't do a converter swap on it either. For a tow rig, even a 4.8l one, I would think large trans cooler, 4.10 gears.

I towed a race car with my '03 (4.8L) and I'll tell ya it wasn't fun.

Put a tvs on it that will make it better

4.10 gears would prolly be a lot better but that little 4.8 just don't have any ***** esp when you hook a trailor to it

4.10's and a tune. If you go with a converter, Id keep it small 2600 or less. I bought my CC for towing the boat with the family, it does OK, but is no tow truck by any means. I just re-geared to 4.10's and it made a big difference

4.10s Definetly helped my 4.8... look into maybe intake/exhaust and a tune. I wouldn't even do a small converter if you plan on towing a lot... my 4.8 went 14.8 in 1/4

Unfortunately, the 5.3 with AFM gets virtually the same mileage as the 4.8, which didn't get AFM. With the six-speed it probably gets better city and hwy mileage.

I agree with the blower suggestion if you can spare the cash. The positive displacement blowers make a small engine act like a much bigger engine than it is since it can make peak boost from converter stall (1800rpm) to redline for a very flat torque curve. you'll also retain your current MPG when cruising. A 4.8 with 10-12psi from a PD blower will probably make around 450-500hp at the crank but it will drive/act like a big block with the same power and still get 18-20mpg on the highway.

Other than that, gears will help but they are no replacement for power. Also, 4.10s in these trucks will have you buzzing 24-2500rpm at 75mph on the freeway versus ~2000 with 3.42s. Take that into consideration if you ever want to put an exhaust on it... the GenIII+ engines will drone around that rpm range.
