Well this f'ing sucks. By the guy doing the install, it appears the pinion threads were dorked on the set on gears that I bought. The gears I bought from someone local and was given the impression they were new. Anyway, when he tighten the pinion nut, the pinion threads dorked the nut threads. He did not know this happened until he pulled the nut off to reshim the pinion.
So then the 4.11s are screwed. It being Sunday afternoon he decided to put the 3.42s back in. He used the same nut and fucked up the pinion threads on the 3.42s. So at this point it is late in the evening and has to give up the ghost. He takes off work the next day to get the 4.11 pinion fixed and reshimed and buy replacement pieces. Of course I am about to puke through all this. So at 5:00 pm with no hope, I am fratically calling around trying to find a gear set and not sure this guy can get them in.
So, I decided to have him put the truck back together without the pinion. Now I am having it towed 25 miles away to a place I originally got an estimate from. He has a day and a half backup on work. He does have 3.42 and 3.73 on shelf. He will have to order 4.10/4.11s. So I am trying to decide on wheter to wait the extra day for the gears or put 3.73 in there to be done with it. Hell, I may just have him put the 3.42s back in there and take it straight to a dealership and trade it in on a sport/luxury ride of some sort.
The first place I screwed up. I didnt follow my golden rule on buying used (dont). Secondly, if it cost a little more to get it done at a reptuable shop, do it because it can cost more in the long run.
Between the gears, install kit, towing, and missing work Monday, I could have bought a Truetrac.

Well, yesterday I decided to go ahead and order the 4.10s (Strange/US Gear). Had them overnight the parts and it should be here at noon. Maybe can have my truck back Thursday evening.
Come to find out, the place that is doing the fix, changes gears for Rick Hendrick Chevrolet and does the majority of the work on rear ends in this area. He had some interesting comments on synthetic oil, friction modifier, and the various LSD.
He says he only uses mineral oil gl-5 rated with the friction modifier. Says GM uses the synthetic only for longevity. And he prefers Auburn over Eaton.

Well the gears came in today (Wednesday) at 10:00 am and the bitch is finished. Of course it really ripped me a new *******. 225 for gears, 70 for overnight shipping, 6 hrs of labor, parts, and fluids. Honestly, it would have cost me that, minus shipping, if I went there first.
