I was actually advised by a few shops to avoid putting in a new GM ring & pinion when I went to step up to 4.10's. Each shop had told me horror stories of trying to get proper backlash setup with the 8.6 ring, they all advised going aftermarket with an 8.5

Which probably had nothing to do with the higher profit margin of the aftermarket gears, it was the unnecessarily tight tolerances of those crappy GM rings and pinions, right?

Just a friendly bit of advice....if a shop tells you anything even remotely close to this, run - don't walk - away from them and go somewhere else.

can anyone recommend a good pinion depth tool?

I have experience setting up ford 8.8's, and have the ford tool for this.

But that won't help with the GM rear.

just leave the stock pinion shim in there and it should work out good.

Actually what I wound up purchasing was a good bit cheaper than the stock GM pieces, although I didn't buy the gear sets from any of the shops who told me this I was quoted from two of them and they were both cheaper than original GM sets.

American Axle and Manufacturing make the gears for gm. I just got a gear sed of 4.10 and bearings for 256. Not too bad!!
