good tranny shop in OC, Ca, rebuild
Ok my transmission is starting to act up on my 2000, 2wd, Silverado 1500, 5.3 w/tow package. I was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions for me.
*One, I am going to have my transmission rebuilt because i would like to save myself $1500. Are there any Pros/Cons to this idea? Keep in mind im not going to buy a re-man, im physically going to take my trans out and have it rebuilt. Also, or is it even possible, to have a torque converter rebuilt? and if so, should i have that done as well?
*Second, Do you think the shop will just automatically install strong internals or are they going to use all stock parts? i would love to have a Transgo HD2 shift kit installed along with a good servo. Do you think they would do that for a small fee because they will already be in there anyways?
* Third, do you guys know of any good shops in Orange County, Ca? i can do the install myself ( just put a new LS1 in a 00' camero SS after my idiot brother blew his engine to hell, so im no stranger to working on cars ). Is there any tips/tricks, special tools i need to get it done? We had to buy a special, one-off, hand made, bleed line to bleed the slave cylinder on my brothers camero and i want to make sure that i wont need anything like that.
* Lastly, is there anything you guys would have had done to your transmission? meaning, any special valving, or high performance servos, or shift kits that would make the transmission a lot better?
keep in mind, my truck has custom made suspension ( custom lift kit ) , 33 x12.50 x 16 tires and is built to haul dirt bikes around in and to be able to take a beating while off-roading in the desert. all that said though, i would love it to haul *** yet still be a very smooth riding daily driver/ street truck...if its possible. I was told with and auto trans, simple mods can make the truck much faster ( or seem like it ) and i would love to know what those are.

I would go with the 4l80e and be done with it. You can have a 4l60e built, but the design is intrinsically weak compared to the 4l80e. So even if you spend bigtime money on it with very good parts it's still may not hold up longterm to yours needs (i.e. off-roading, towing, etc.) It is a very straightforward swap on a 2wd truck. Basically all you do is move the crossmember back 6 inches or so, and make a few simple wiring changes.

The 4L80e is about $2200 from GM. And does come with a 3 year, 100k mile warranty. They cover parts and labor to remove it if something should happen. But they will not cover it if the truck is modded alot. And I'm not sure if they will cover it if it doesn't go in the intended vehicle it was sold for.
