Has anyone broken a TruTrac?
#11
It may just be the way it operates. I'm not too familiar with them, just trying to learn now. I asked if any had failed because so many use them there would surely be some failures by now.

im happy that i went with the tru-trac.
im using genuine gears and they are quiet. i got them on the cheap (free) so thats the only reason i got genuine. no issues with them at all but if i had to pay for gears i woulda gone oem

I had an issue with the bolts that hold the differential together on each side backing out. A month or so after taking it to the track and launching it on slick at 4500 rpm on a 150 shot I started hearing and feeling a pop in the drivetrain. A couple months after the track trip I pull the cover to do a gear swap and find pieces of mangled bolts in the bottom. Most of the 3/8" bolts had backed all the way out and got mangled against the ring gear. The drivetrain jolts (that I originally thought was a bump in the road) were the bolts getting pinched between the ring and pinion. A+ to the Motive Gears for barely even showing a scratch from it. The bolts were stretch probably which worked them loose. The worm gear unit in the TT puts tons of axial force internally torward each wheel when under load. The standard spider gear units do as well but possibly not as much.
IMO a 500 whp automatic truck will have no issues with a Trutrac. A manual transmission is 3x harder on drivetrain parts than an automatic. I have been hard launching manual tranny vehicles for years and have had to spend 3x's as much on drivetrain parts than automatics with trans brakes with 2x the power.
For an example: My RCSB 2wd N/A (~430whp) broke an axle at the track. Parish's RCSB 4wd automatic truck with over 1000whp never broke an axle to my knowledge with a hundred passes on it at least. Yeah, some of his power is being used up by the front end but he also weighs ~500lbs more than mine which puts more load. Besides that, have you EVER heard of anyone else breaking an axle in a 8.5 30 spline in these trucks?

Cool guys, thanks for the feedback. TurboGibbs, if the TruTrac gets your approval during Manual trans launches and N20 abuse I would feel confident buying one. My truck is a 2wd auto and will see light strip use.
TurboGibbs, do you have any links to gear swap tutorials for a 10 bolt? I am planning to swap my own gears and TruTrac, do you have any other tips/hints/link?
Thanks again!

I don't know of any write-ups but i'm sure there are some. My best tip is to put it together with the factory pinion shim and you are usually ok on the pattern. Just change the carrier shims as needed side to side to adjust the backlash first. Doing a gear swap is quite a task if you've never been involved with one, not to mention the proper tools needed. You will need a shim kit for an 8.6 (the 8.5 use a different size carrier brg and shim). You need to replace the crush sleve and pinion nut which usually come with the kit. I'm sure you can find some write ups on the net.
