So the stock differential unit that cam on your truck was a 10 bolt 8.5?I ask because I am in the processing of buying some 3:73 gears for my 2000 silverado 4.8 and I was just wondering if they were the right size. The differential is the one it came from the dealership.
I think 99 was the switch over year from the 8.5 to 8.6 rear end. If you had an early MY 2000 it may have the 8.5, but more than likely you've got an 8.6.

When attempting to buy 3:73 gears do both the 8.5 and 8.6 fit in the 10 bolt without any problems?

yep yours would be the 10 bolt 8.6 30 spline...sometimes they will be refered to as 8.5 but officially it is 8.6
