How bad is the T56 swap for a 4.8 5spd
I found a T56 6spd in a friends shop out of a 99 TA. He wants 1200 for it. I was wondering how big of a PIA it was to swap them out. I already have a 5spd. Someone please let me know. Thanks

I think $1200 is way too much.
a shallow 1st gear (t56) and a weak engine down low (4.8) are going to be a horrific combo without serious rear diff gear

my friend has a s/c 4.3 blazer with t-56 and he didn't have enough power to use 6th with 3.73s are 28'' ish tires.
4.10s are barely enough for him- in a smaller lighter truck that i'm going to assume is making about the same power- more down low if anything- and smaller tires
i'd say 4.56 is a MUST for you. but that puts your 6th gear right were your 5th gear is now- or close to. makes you wonder if its worth doing?

I have 3.73's, 28 inch tires, and the 6 speed, and I like 6th gear. I use 6th to help my mpg! I cruse 70 mph at 1500-1600 rpm. I can use 4th and 5th and be over 120mph. And I like the 6th just for crusing. I do agree with you treyz28 it is hard to run that 6th gear at lower power levels. Before my truck was tuned It was harder to use that gear. Now that my truck is tuned its usable. With a stock power level I would change the gears. My turbo loves the long gears, so I do not plan on changing gears any time soon.

xrev ran in to some issues on here about doing this with a 4.8 5spd. Evidently the crank for the 4.8/5spd is longer than the others, so the flywheel didn't line up and he issues with the starter. I would PM him before you go any further as he is in the know. He had to use some sort of spacer or something.
