Default how to check

im having some problems with the tranny area right now, but im not sure if its the tranny or the converter. when its cold in the mornings it shifts fine most of the time, but after you romp on it it starts gettin stupid. you can feel it either the converter locking up or going into OD but you can tap the gas and it will rev about 700-1000 rpm. im thinking since its basically a stock 60E (HD-2, vette servo, billet OD servo) that im loosing my 3-4! Im just not wanting to throw money at it to find the problem, i know there has to be some ways of checking to see what it is.

ok update here:

changed the fluid didnt flush and changed the filter. fluid didnt look bad didnt have any particles in it but was dark and didnt have a really bad smell. after everything was put back together took it for a test drive back home to get something and then back to my dads and this is a total of about 30 mins round trip!! temp went from nothing to 210 in this time driving like i was 80 years old. either converter was slipping or something like the tcc solenoid isnt working because it didnt lockup, if it did i couldnt tell. i kept a constant 60mph and slightly pressed the gas and rpm went up as i think its supposed to showing me the converter was locked right? 1-2 shift is still hard and 2-3 is still hard, but 3-2 downshift was kinda weird like it was slipped. could this be solenoid related??
