Default how to determine

how can you determine the size of of a rear differential if you have no rpo or ring and pinion size? basically looking at a rearend can it be determined?

Take the differential cover off and start counting teeth

what size ring gear should the 8.5 have and what size for the 8.6? also what years silverado has what size?

count the teeth on both gears and divide the two

Stock: 3:23/ 3:42/ 3:73 / 4:10.
After market: anything in between and beyond.
