They are not lighter. The composite material pretty much weighs the same. The stepsides also have a little more structural support to hold everything in place.

When pulling my bed off last summer to install my c-notch it felt heavier than my cousins fleetside bed. My truck weighs less though and I thought it was because of the stepside bed. I guess its a toss up.

I have heard this before many times. Looks like the fleet side trucks are lighter.

My 96 stepside was fiberglass too. I knew it, and it was confirmed after a so called friend cracked it from one side of the wheel well all the way around to the other!!

The 99+ aren't fiberglass like the 98's were. Believe me, Ive broken two of them in two accidents (both weren't my fault) They are more like plastic, but the inside of the bed is all metal so you don't save much weight.

Yes, the bed is made out of a composite plastic that is about 1/8" thick compared to the 1/16 or less metal fleetside bed.

I love the look of my stepside but, I may have to find a fleetside bed if it's lighter. My driver side bed panel is cracked and the bottom of the bed is super messed up so I can justify getting a whole new one. The bed panels are some really thick plastic.
