Default Installing Tru-Cool 40,000 0n 2008 1500

I am going to install a 40,000 trans cooler on my truck. The FLT trans and Yank Stall are uping my temps to around 200 so time to cool them down. I got the cooler with the thermal bypass my question is do you guys recomend running the cooler with the stock radiator cooler or do you bypass it? I do live in a cold climate in the winter. Just seams to me if you bypass the radiator cooler your trans will run cooler. Also what lines are you guys hooking into.

Thanks!

great cooler. i dont see my temps go over 150 on hot summer days on hard runs..

it should look like this>

i used the fittings it came with- unless u want to get braided lines.

i used the bypass, because we have hot weather throught the whole yr, but its up 2 you.

I'm running mine without thermal bypass (being in the Sunbelt), but if I were where you are, I'd look into rigging a valve to go back and forth between bypass and non-bypass so that you can operate safely in the coldest of winters and hottest of summers. There are actually some colder parts of the year down here that I wish I had that optionality with mine (when my tranny temps don't exceed the 125-150º range in stop and go driving).

The top line going into the radiator is the return line back to the trans right?

Yep top line is return back to the trans, and as Derek mentioned, I too like to use my trans coolers as an auxiliary cooler, not as the only cooler, especially since you have winter where you live

I agree; the cooler really should be installed in conjunction with the cooler in the radiator to aid in bringing up the transmission temperatures more quickly and to keep the temp’s more stable. As a lot of people have found out, when transmission temperatures are too cold, the converter will not be allowed to lock-up. This is totally normal, but there have been quite a few people that have installed a large cooler such as the Tru-Cool 40,000 GVW unit and experienced what can seem as an extensive amount of time before lock-up is allowed. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a good cooler such as the Tru-Cool unit, but one also needs to take precautions as to the installation, especially in an environment that can see colder temperatures. For those that have the Tru-Cool without the internal bypass and have been experiencing excessively cold transmission temperatures, Tru-Cool has an external add-on by-pass available.
